Day 1: San Francisco to Monterey. 154 miles.
Leave San Francisco around 9:00 a.m. Driving south along San Andreas Fault then west to the Pacific Ocean down Highway One you go through Santa Cruz.  Miles of artichoke and strawberry fields by the Monterey Bay, home of Fort Ord where armed forces once trained now students prepare for their future at California State University. Going through Monterey we stop at Cannery Row around lunch time and optional visit of the world renown Monterey Bay Aquarium. Driving along stops are made at  *Pacific Grove  *17 Mile Drive  *Pebble Beach *Carmel by the Sea for about an hour.
Check-in to the hotel by 5:30 p.m.

Day 2: Tuesday. Monterey to San Luis Obispo  148 miles. 
* Scenic Highway One *Big Sur Coast  *Coastal Redwoods * San Simeon.                               
* Tour No. 1 of Hearst Castle, ideal for first time visitors with an easy walk, a total of about 150 steps. Takes about 2 hours. Drive east via  Highway One to San Luis Obispo arriving by 3:30.

AMTRAK to San Francisco. 263 miles. At 3:43 p.m. all aboard on Coast Starlight Train # 14 that left Los Angeles this morning on its way to Seattle. At Camp Roberts we enter Monterey county. Suddenly along the river there are oil fields giving way to miles and miles of newly planted vineyards where just a few years ago there was only cattle pasture. At King City along Salinas River we go by small towns, fields of lettuce, broccoli and acres of green houses arriving in Salinas at 6:36. Along the San Andreas fault line we go northwest through garlic country to Silicon Valley at San Jose. On the eastern shores past marshlands of San Francisco Bay the train reaches Jack London Square in Oakland by 9:35. The thruway coach takes us across the Bay Bridge reaching San Francisco Ferry Building terminal by 10:10 p.m. Most down town hotels are about ten minutes by cab. For late bookings stay at alternate hotel.

Since 1924 California Parlor Car Tours has operated in this area, initially visiting the Missions along the Camino Real and then on the coast Route One where trains cannot go and driving is best left to locals who know. Well timed meal stops, essential sightseeing, tours, admissions and rooms are prearranged. One dinner with a choice from the menu, not pre-set. Breakfast is on your own at the hotel. Enjoy the afternoon and the evening at the Hyatt Regency Resort. Play golf, walk, ride bikes, go to the spa, go swimming or just relax. On Tuesday after the Hearst Castle tour you travel to San Luis Obispo to board the AMTRAK Coast Starlight coming through Salinas Valley and along San Andreas Fault to San Jose and Oakland. A short bus transfer will take you to San Francisco arriving around ten at night.
